Breast Augmentation FAQs

Breast Augmentation FAQs

Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the UK. However, it’s understandable if you’re thinking of undergoing the surgery, you’ll have a lot of questions regarding what happens afterwards.

Here, we’ll look at and answer some of the most common breast augmentation FAQs our patients at Cosmetic Surgery South Wales ask after they’ve undergone breast enlargement.

Q: How long will I need to sleep on my back after a breast augmentation?

A: If you’re a stomach sleeper, the prospect of having to lay on your back after breast augmentation can be a little worrying. However, it is vital in order to ensure the breasts maintain their shape. As for how long you need to sleep on your back, most surgeons recommend doing so for six to eight weeks. You may be able to adjust to a side sleeping position with good bra support after five weeks however. It’s best to follow your surgeon’s advice.

Q: Do I need to wear a surgical bra?

A: Whether or not you are required to wear a surgical bra after the procedure will differ between surgeons. Each has their own strict instructions they like to be followed. There’s actually no evidence to suggest wearing a surgical bra makes any difference to the results. So, if you’re asked not to wear one don’t be concerned.

Q: Is a loss of sensation normal after a boob job?

A: There are a lot of potential side effects of breast augmentation and loss of sensation is one of them. This largely occurs if you are significantly changing the size of the breasts, so going from an A to a D cup for example. This occurs when the nerve is stretched during the surgery, leading to a loss of sensation.
The good news is if you do experience a loss of sensation, it is only temporary and will heal naturally with time.

Q: How soon can you have sex again after a breast augmentation?

A: It’s often advised patients wait at least two weeks before having sex after breast augmentation. However, you’ll want to avoid any vigorous activities which could dislodge implants for up to 6 weeks. So, use your own initiative and be cautious after the initial two-week healing period.
