Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasy) in South Wales

Weight loss, pregnancy and the ageing process can all result in sagging, excess skin on the abdomen and many of us find it impossible to improve the appearance of the stomach, however much we diet and exercise.

An abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a very popular and highly effective procedure to remove this excess skin and also to eradicate any surplus fat deposits. I usually combine a tummy tuck with liposuction to create a more defined, taut waistline and produce more aesthetically-pleasing contours.

Am I suitable for a tummy tuck?

Even very slim, fit patients commonly find the abdomen an area they are dissatisfied with. Once stretched or elasticity is lost as a result of the ageing process, it is usually impossible for the skin to ‘snap back’ and a surgical procedure to remove this excess skin is often the most appropriate procedure.

Some patients may have fat deposits on the abdomen that are marring their body shape and, if skin elasticity is good, they may be better suited to liposuction alone. Women may experience a loss of skin and muscle tone only in the lower part of the abdomen, as a result of pregnancy, and they may just require a mini tummy tuck.

Your body frame, in terms of your hips, waist and chest, will dictate the end result. During your consultation, I listen carefully to what you’re hoping to achieve, before performing a comprehensive assessment. From this, I will be able to advise you on the results that we can achieve from your tummy tuck procedure.

Tummy tucks or liposuction are not weight loss procedures; I explain to patients that they should be at or close to their ideal weight to ensure optimal results. If you have maintained this weight for a while it also means that you will find it easier to sustain your results afterwards.

What does a tummy tuck procedure entail?

During a standard tummy tuck, which is performed under a general anaesthetic, an incision is made just above the pubic bone, usually from hip to hip, allowing me to remove an oval-shaped piece of skin. I am also able to remove any excess fat deposits as well as tightening the stomach muscles which can stretch and separate, contributing to the lack of tone and definition of the abdomen. Once the remaining skin has been stretched down, the umbilicus is often repositioned.

Typically, a standard abdominoplasty will take up to three hours and requires at least a one-night stay in hospital. We insert drains to remove any fluid so it doesn’t accumulate beneath the skin, but they will usually be removed before you are discharged. I use dissolvable stitches so you will not need to return for them to be removed.

A mini tummy tuck involves a smaller incision and the umbilicus will remain in position. This does mean a less intensive recovery period afterwards.

What is the recovery period like after a tummy tuck?

In the first few days you will be feeling discomfort and a sensation of tightness in the abdomen area. There will also be a degree of swelling that will take a couple of months to fully disappear, gradually improving over time.

It is important that you rest properly when you return home so ensure you have stocked up on easy to prepare meals and arranged childcare if necessary. By the end of the first week, you should be able to perform light activities and it is important to become active as soon as possible, although avoid anything too strenuous.

Over the following weeks you can return to most normal activities and most people typically go back to work after two to three weeks, as long as employment does not involve heavy lifting. I recommend you avoid strenuous exercise for the first six weeks. It is important that you listen to your body throughout your recovery period.

Are there any possible complications with a tummy tuck?

All cosmetic surgery procedures carry risks; these include fluid build-ups, excessive bleeding, infections and problems with wound healing. During your consultation, I discuss all these potential complications in depth as well as covering the benefits and limitations of surgery, so you have all the necessary information to make an informed decision.

What tummy tuck results can I expect?

A tummy tuck does leave a lengthy scar that can take up to a year before it fully flattens and fades. I ensure it is positioned in the best place possible and carefully plan the incisions to reduce tension, to produce optimal scarring.

For most patients, I incorporate liposuction in a Water Jet Tummy Tuck as I believe it produces the best possible results for my patients. Patients are generally highly satisfied with the transformation of their abdomen after a tummy tuck, as it gives them increased self-confidence.

Testimonials

I was so anxious about everything to do with my operation and had many questions but Anthony MacQuillan answered all my questions and put me at ease, and saw me on a regular basis at my requests, nothing seemed like too much trouble for him, if I had a question or a worry he was there to help me.

The result I had from my tummy tuck is amazing and I have to keep looking at the before pictures to appreciate how fabulous my body now looks, and can now look at myself in a full length mirror for the first time in 26 years. I would definitely use Anthony again he is different from other Consultants, he is so human and like talking to a friend, whereas some can be so ‘high and mighty’, but Anthony has never been like that at all.

Everything Anthony told me about the healing process has been spot on and things have settled down at the timescales that I was advised.

Thank you Anthony I would trust you with my life.

I cannot recommend Mr Macquillan enough or the procedure (tummy tuck) I had. From the first meeting he explained everything, answered questions (no matter how silly) and put me at ease.

Throughout the process he has been professional but not intimidating and always instilled confidence. Mr Macquillan even did the surgery the day his wife gave birth so as to not let me and my childcare plans down – that is dedication!

Post surgery care was great and I can not fault anything, I would recommend his skills to anyone. Mr Macquillan’s secretary Margaret is amazing also. Thank you it has changed my life.
